An Old Friend and Technology

Development of technology is a continuous process. Every second counts and it will never stop. The technology developed in 20th century is the internet. At least I believe that. Internet has affected our life very much. Distance seems to be not a major issue. Yes, we already have telephone but internet is much greater than that. It connects almost everyone today. Facebook, friendster, multiply, blogs, VoIP phone such as skype, and many more.

Internet has created its own world, the virtual world. In it, we can have a second life, just liket Second Life game. Internet has changed how people live today. Online shopping is just one of example how the internet has changed our life. However, not everyone is able to connect to the internet. If you live in a small town or sub-urban area, it will be quite difficult to have internet connection. Just like what happened to me for the last 2 years.

I'm working in a small area, industrial estate to be exact. Yes we have internet connection in the office. But after that, I feel like being an isolated island. Until last night, I started to be able to connect to it. Thanks to my old friend.

About my old friend, I just met him recently after our last encountered about 8 years ago. He was my ex-classmate when we were in high school. Tech-geek if I can say. I learnt a lot from him, from bad things to useful knowledge about the technology, especially internet.

He offered me an internet connection by using OpenVPN. It's the first time I ever heard about OpenVPN but actually it's not new anymore. Many people know about it. But for me, it's new. So what is the good thing about it? I can connect everywhere as long as it has the mobile phone GSM networks. Yey, meaning finally I can connect when I'm in the working area. Thanks to him. But another problem appear, my laptop has many problems to come with. One sentence to describe it, "I hate Windows Vista Home Basic!" (CRoe.Ta)
